I am a fragment of a mirror...

I remember the first time I discovered the writings of Robert Fulghum ("All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things")
But it was this passage, from another of his books ("It Was On Fire When I Lay Down On It") that has stayed with me, for decades...

What is the meaning of life?

And in particular, this quote, attributed to Alexander Papaderous:

"I am a fragment of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world–into the black places in the hearts of men–and change some things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life"

"Every minute someone leaves this world" by Marianne Baum

"Every minute someone leaves this world" by Marianne Baum

“Every minute someone leaves this world behind.
We are all in the ‘the line’ without knowing it.
We never know how many people are before us.
We can not move to the back of the line.
We can not step out of the line.
We can not avoid the line.
So while we wait in the line…
Make moments count.
Make priorities.
Make the time.
Make your gifts known.
Make a nobody feel like a somebody.
Make your voice heard.
Make the small things big.
Make someone smile.
Make the change.
Make love.
Make up.
Make peace.
Make sure to tell your people they are loved.
Make sure to have no regrets.
Make sure you are ready.”

Finding Inspiration: Action Creates Emotion

There are many who are struggling, who may feel their back pressed against the wall, who may be experiencing feelings of depression, who may feel lost, who may feel hopeless.

Now is the time to look deep inside and find that single grain of sand - your pebble of granite - upon which you can stand. That pebble is your belief in yourself - that you will never quit, you will never give up. You can always do one more thing.

If you think you have lost your motivation, if you can't find the enthusiasm to get back in the fight - there is a very simple thing you can do to reignite that flame.

Here is the principle that I use to prime my mental pump - to motivate myself - when I feel like my motivation and thinking have fallen into a rut: Action creates emotion.

My preferred choice of action: Running.

At one of my lowest points in life, I could barely run a quarter mile.

But, I put on my running shoes, and did a 10 minute walk-run.

In a few weeks, I was up to a mile. Then two miles.

Within a few months, I was doing 6 mile runs every day.

Find what works for you - but if you need a mental infusion - seek physical exertion.

While running, you can also use that time to listen to inspirational talks. Here's one of my favorites, by Eric D. Thomas, Ph.D.
