2026-10-02 Friday - A Lesson In Entrepreneurship

[image credit: kpbritton on pixabay dot com]

I am reminded of a brief conversation I had with my grandfather, almost 60 years ago, as our family had gathered at a campground around one of the many lakes in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas for a long weekend in the cool fall weather.

Even when he took a break from farming, he would always listen to the Farm Report on the radio, every day, checking the trends and news, and the latest quotes for soybeans and cotton.

As I stood by the open door of his truck, as he listened to the radio, I vividly remember asking him this question: "What is a good price for a bushel of soybeans?"

His reply was a lesson in entrepreneurship, encapsulated in just a few words:
"As much as you can get".

~

In the farming off-seasons, my grandfather frequently traveled the backroads of Arkansas, and several of the surrounding states – looking for family homes that might have old barns and smokehouses, that might have hidden antique treasures he could offer to purchase. He would then travel to auctions and flea markets to sell his items, and buy more.

One year, I traveled with him down to the DFW area, for a mega flea market event. He setup his tables, and placed his items out for inspection by the constantly flowing crowds.

I noted he did not have prices on his items, and asked how he decided what to charge someone.

He stated that he looked at their shoes.

Nice shoes, higher price.

2026-06-08 Remembering Anthony Bourdain

Today's meditation:
It is 8 years since the passing of Anthony Bourdain (RIP: 1956-2018).

I have a deep and abiding sense of admiration for anyone that has an artisan's approach to mastering their craft - regardless of their particular art, or discipline.

From masters of the Tea Ceremony, to Shokunin masters of carpentry, to painters and sculptors, to writers, and so many more.

This is the 27th year since the publication of an essay in The New Yorker - and the subsequent feasts of entertaining insights into the many talented artisans who practice the culinary arts - that crossed international borders, languages, cultures, and socioeconomic layers.

Reading this essay is a goodness for the soul, regardless of your chosen profession. It is a celebration of art and craft, skill and discipline. Worthy of reflection upon how we each practice our respective arts.

Daylight Fades - Darkness Descends - Strength Diminishes

[image credit: geralt on pixabay dot com]

There are more endings ahead of me, than beginnings.

More battles to be lost, than won.

Death recently whispered in my ear - "your time is shorter than you know".

There is no fear - no trembling part of me that will cling to this life.

The veil between this life - and the next, draws near.

I welcome the final steps on this journey, within this plane of existence.

No matter whether the sands in the hourglass of my fate are one hour, one day, one year, one decade, or more ...

I am at peace.

I have fought a good fight.

I will do what good I can.

I will "When hungry, eat - when tired, sleep."

A favorite book: (compiled by Paul Reps and  Nyogen Senzaki, originally published in 1957)

Zen Flesh, Zen Bones: : A Collection of Zen and Pre-Zen Writings
Also see this other edition on Amazon, and this one.

"Zen Flesh, Zen Bones is the best-selling collection of the most popular enlightenment stories, anecdotes, and koans of Zen literature, which introduced a generation of Americans to Zen. Included here are four Zen and pre-Zen classics:

  • 101 Zen Stories —anecdotes and enlightenment stories of the great masters
  • The Gateless Gate —forty-eight Zen koans to awaken the enlightened mind
  • The 10 Bulls, or "Ox-Herding Pictures," depicting the ten stages of awareness
  • Centering—a four-thousand-year-old Sanskrit text that may well be one of the roots of Zen thought"

2026-05-24 Sunday - RIP Alice Faye Sullins (1940-2026)

Her race is done.
Now sets the sun.

Whither she may travel,
We may not know.

But may it be to shores of silver sands,
And a bright sun shining upon new distant lands.

May the rain fall soft upon her fields.
May the road rise up to meet her.

Let no door be barred.
Let every hearth be welcoming.

May her cup never be empty.
May her bowl always be full.

May joy and laughter surround her.

May Peace Be Upon Her and About Her.
May The Light Guide and Protect Her.

2026-04-26 Sunday - Movie Recommendation

I missed my chance to see this movie when it was in theaters - so I rented it on Amazon Prime last night...

Quite enjoyable...with some surprises that delighted, and some twists that I didn't see coming, right up till the end.

A great piece of acting by Sam Rockwell, and the supporting ensemble.

8 out of 10.

2026-01-24 Sat - Winter Storm Fern

Today's meditations:

01:00

It is 6F outside, as I write this...

For the many who are hunkered down during Winter Storm Fern this weekend, many experiencing sub-zero temperatures...I just have this one thought to share with you:

It is 28F at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

I am questioning my life choices - and wondering why the hell am I not in Costa Rica - on the deck of a sailboat, or at least sipping some adult beverages on a beach.

A fitting quote for starting the 2026 new year...

I don't know what this year holds in store, but as Matthew Quigley so eloquently said:

"I don't know where we're going, but there's no use being late." 🤣

Chivalry is Not Dead - nor Forgotten

"One For All."

"And All For One."

"So Say We All"

The first two lines are from 'The Three Musketers', by Alexandre Dumas (Novelist · playwright, 1829–1869; published in 1844).  The story takes place between 1625 and 1628.

The 1993 film adaptation is a favorite.

The last line is from Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) a science fiction series - which was ad-libbed by Edward James Olmos, in his role as Commander Adama.

The test that always applies: "Is the cause just?"

Are you perhaps familiar with the story of 'Quentin Durward'?
A historical novel by Sir Walter Scott (
Scottish novelist · poet ·  historian, 1771-1832; published in 1823). The story takes place in the year 1468, as the age of chivalry is passing away,

The 1955 film adaptation is a favorite.

By a happenstance of the greatest serendipity...just before I was about to shutdown my computer for the night, I came across this brief video, which contains this brilliant wisdom from Terry Pratchett:

"You need to believe in things that aren't true... how else can they become?"

These are words that I needed to hear, now, in this moment...
