*** FASCINATING FACTS ***

"The performer playing Judge Weaver, Joseph N. Welch, was not primarily known as an actor, and this was in fact his only depiction of a character in a feature film. Rather, he was a lawyer who became a household name as counsel for the U.S. Army during the anti-Communist investigation commonly known as the Army-McCarthy hearings. Welch was widely thought to have helped release Senator Joseph McCarthy's stranglehold over the country when he stood up to McCarthy and his aide Roy Cohn in the hearings, saying, "Senator. You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" This courageous stand has been seen as the turning point in finally defeating McCarthyism."

"'Anatomy of a Murder' is a faithful recreation of an actual 1952 murder case in which the defense attorney was John D. Voelker, who wrote the original novel under the pen name Robert Traver. The specifics are the same: an army lieutenant, Coleman Peterson, shot a barkeeper, Maurice Chenoweth, whom he accused of raping his beautiful and often flirtatious wife. The lieutenant pleads not guilty by reason of temporary insanity and a psychiatrist testifies that he suffered an "irresistible impulse." The jury acquits the lieutenant, and the couple then skips town in their mobile home without paying the legal bill, with Peterson leaving a note that he'd had an "irresistible impulse" to leave."

High Lama:

"It is the entire meaning and purpose of Shangri-La. It came to me in a vision, long, long ago. I saw all the nations strengthening, not in wisdom, but in the vulgar passions and the will to destroy. I saw the machine power multiplying, until a single weaponed man might match a whole army. I foresaw a time when man, exalting in the technique of murder, would rage so hotly over the world, that every book, every treasure, would be doomed to destruction. This vision was so vivid and so moving, that I determined to gather together all things of beauty and of culture that I could, and preserve them here, against the doom toward which the world is rushing. Look at the world today. Is there anything more pitiful? What madness there is! What blindness! What unintelligent leadership! A scurrying mass of bewildered humanity, crashing headlong against each other, propelled by an orgy of greed and brutality. A time must come my friend, when this orgy will spend itself. When brutality and the lust for power must perish by its own sword. Against that time, is why I avoided death, and am here. And why you were brought here. For when that day comes, the world must begin to look for a new life. And it is our hope that they may find it here."

"Shangri-La is a fictional place in Tibet's Kunlun Mountains,[1] described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by the British author James Hilton. Hilton portrays Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains.[1] In the novel, the people who live in Shangri-La are almost immortal, living hundreds of years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly ageing in appearance."

"The Joy Luck Club"

It has probably been two decades since I first watched "The Joy Luck Club". I think I checked it out at the Redondo Beach Library - and watched it on my sailboat in the marina...having also snagged a few slices of pizza from a nearby deli.

It created a powerful impression upon me.

Last night, I watched it again.

It is indeed, cinematic excellence.

The storytelling is exceptional, the acting superb.

Its qualities have stood the test of time.

The characters are portrayed with warmth, intensity, nuance, grace, and as flawed human beings.

Story arcs are interwoven in such a seamless way that the word "flowing" immediately comes to mind.

Contrasting this movie with the abudance of vapid violence that passes as entertainment fare today...and there is no contest.

This movie has heart. Miles and miles of heart.

Ying Ying: "All around this house I see the signs. My daughter looks but she does not see. This is a house that will break into pieces. It's not too late. All my pains, my regrets, I will gather them together. My daughter will hear me calling, even though I've said no words. She will climb the stairs to find me. She will be scared because at first her eyes will see nothing. She will feel in her heart this place where she hides her fears. She will know I am waiting like a tiger in the trees, now ready to leap out and cut her spirit loose."
