My Greatest Weakness

My greatest weakness is my zero extremely low tolerance for those who exhibit:
- laziness
- sloppiness
- incompetence
- dishonesty
- intentional stupidity
- stubborn resistance to improvement
- unethical behavior
- racism
- prejudice
- discrimination
- cruelty

Why do I consider this a weakness?
Because my initial reaction to such behavior is an immediate sense of intense irritation.

You can be sure - if I ever choose to show my anger - it is because I made a conscious choice to do so - and, somebody has seriously fucked-up.

Too long...

Too long I have waited.
Too long I have simply endured.

Repeating, like a tireless film loop...the same sequence of events, every day.

Too long I have sublimated the intense longing for the open road.

Too long I have had to endure the psychosis that is what mostly constitutes corporate America.

Too long I have denied the **** against stupidity and incompetence.

The years have flowed by...like the waters of the Amazon.

Too long I have tarried.

Cobweb and vines entangling my soul, chaining my heart to a time, to a place, to memories of things that have long since passed, nevermore to return.

Winter deepens.

Days shorten.

Darkness lengthens.

But, the turning of the spheres will bring the dawn...and a new year...and new adventures...and new hopes, new dreams.

For Thy Name is Dog

[image credit: Hendo Wang on Unsplash]

For, Behold!
Thy name is "Dog"!
Thou shalt be long-suffering...
And loyal to thine owner.

A sure friend - like unto no other...
And thou shalt be fêted with treats, until the end of of your days...

And I shall place within you a light that shall shine...
Even until the sun shines no more.

Thy name shall be a blessing...
And a succor in times of joy...
Or, in times of woe.

Of a steadfast heart will I mold thee...

Thou shalt walk at times in the shadows...
And at times in the noonday sun.

Thou shalt lead when they are weary...
And follow...to keep watch from behind.

No evil shall approach...lest it feel the wrath of your rage...
For I shall bless thee with speed, strength, and cunning.

The smallest and the weakest will rest under your watchful eye...
At all times...thou shalt be a comfort to those you ward.

Thine eyes shall be blessed to speak what is in thy heart...
And those who are true - will read your words...in your eyes.

And thy voice will be a warning...and a cause for joy...

For while god may not walk upon the earth...
He has sent you in his stead...until the fullness of time is filled.

“Every minute someone leaves this world” by Marianne Baum

(I have searched for some verification that Marianne Baum is actually the author - but thus far, have been unable to identify an authoritative source. Her story - and suffering - are heartbreaking)

“Every minute someone leaves this world behind. Age has nothing to do with it.
We are all in "the line" without knowing it.
We never know how many people are before us.
We can not move to the back of the line.
We can not step out of the line.
We can not avoid the line.
So while we wait in line:
Make moments count.
Make priorities.
Make the time.
Make your gifts known.
Make a nobody feel like a somebody.
Make your voice heard.
Make the small things big.
Make someone smile.
Make the change.
Make love.
Make up.
Make peace.
Make sure to tell your people they are loved.
Make sure to have no regrets.
Make sure you are ready…”

2022 Thanksgiving Reflections

(Photo by Annie Nyle on Unsplash)

Things for which I am thankful:

  • My sister.
  • Friendships, both old and new - and especially those that have endured (one - or many) decades
  • Access to Opportunity - and meaningful work. Being able to contribute to the building of great technical solutions - that impact millions of people - and billions of dollars of business.
  • That my health and strength remain sufficient to my needs and wants.
  • Personal Freedom and Liberty.
  • Freedom from want and a mind that is satisfied with enough - and freedom from the hunger to continually crave more.
  • Peace - from the ravages of violence and war.
  • Peace - under my roof - and within my soul.
  • The ability to enjoy my own company - and to be alone, without being lonely.
  • The ability to still find moments of peace of mind, even in the face of a grief that does not end - as a parent's decline into dementia accelerates.
  • Bountiful harvests - both literally and figuratively.
  • Glasses that allow me to still read the many books I have loved - and those that are yet unmet.
  • A warm dry bed.
  • the deep sleep of a (mostly) untroubled mind.
  • Freedom from hunger - and at least one good meal per day.
  • The ability to observe, to think, to plan, to wait, to fast.
  • The wisdom of frugality
  • A heart that is quick to laughter - and finds humor, even in the darkest night

New Library Additions: Friend of the Library Book Sale Treasures

While reading a local paper this morning, I saw that there was a nearby Friends of the Library sale being held today.

Now, I have resisted the urge to go any such sales in recent years - as my storage is just about full. But, I decided to go and at least look.

I'm glad I did.

For the vast sum of $13.75, I picked-up the following:
(apparently they gave me some discount on the listed prices - as they were just about to wrap-up at 3pm)

Living Language, Ultimate Spanish, Basic-Intermediate (8 CDs, 416 page textbook): $2
- this will be perfect for my next long drive - and I will use this to rebuild my Spanish over the next year, before going on my next voyage - or traveling.

Shakuhachi - The Japanese Flute, Kohachiro Miyata (music, CD): $1
- a 1977 album
- I love the sound of the Shakuhachi

Crosscurrent, Jake Shimabukuro (music, CD): $1
- His 2003, second full length solo ukulele album

Steve Jobs, by Walter Isaacson (audio book, 7 CDs): $1.50
- For those long cross-country drives that are in my future

Song of Myself, Walt Whitman, read by Stephen Mitchell (poetry, 2 CDs): $1
- An epic poem, from his book, "Leaves of Grass"

Berlitz, French (CD, 224 page phrase book): $2.50
- My French is beyond rusty...I hope to have need of refreshing it in the coming years...

Easy Spanish Reader, A Three-Part Text for Beginning Students, 2nd edition (book, 218 pages): $1
- a good book to practice my Spanish reading comprehension

AMC, For Your Consideration (DVDs, Breaking Bad - pilot and 4 episodes; Mad Men - 4 episodes): $1.50
- cheap entertainment, as I never watched either of those TV series when they were broadcast

Introducción a la Cultura Hispánica (book, 325 pages): $1
- another good book to deepen the practice of my Spanish reading comprehension

Robert Ludum's The Bourne Enigma, by Eric Van Lusterbader (book, 420 pages): $1
- I've enjoyed reading other books by Lusterbader (re: The series of books featuring the character of Nicholas Linnear, starting with The Ninja novel)

The Dictionary of Imaginary Places (book, 454 pages): $1.50
- a book that I will enjoy perusing when my 2nd career, as a writer, kicks into gear in retirement

Richard P. Feynman

I first learned about Feynman, after reading his book:  "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman": Adventures of a Curious Character - which I found fascinating, enthralling, entertaining, mind-expanding, and inspiring.

Later, I read  "What Do You Care What Other People Think?": Further Adventures of a Curious Character - which I also thoroughly enjoyed.

Richard Phillips Feynman (/ˈfaɪnmən/; May 11, 1918 – February 15, 1988) was an American theoretical physicist, known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as his work in particle physics for which he proposed the parton model. For contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 jointly with Julian Schwinger and Shin'ichirō Tomonaga.

A Favorite Author: Hugh Prather

For the last week...there has been a memory that I have struggled to recall...the author of a few books published in the 1970s...that I could vaguely remember - but that left a lasting impression on me.

I could not remember the author's name...although I had a strong impression his last name started with a "P".

His writing wasn't so much as "New Age", but more metaphysical in a Zen kind of way...

His books were always slim volumes...with few words on the page...but thoughts that struck like a bolt of lightning.

I recall how much I enjoyed reading his words...

I've tried doing Google searches several times over the last week...all to no avail...

And then, just now...Serendipity.

Somehow, I read a news item...and the last name of someone mentioned in the article resonated..."Prather".

A quick Google search brought me to his Wikipedia page:

This was the first book of his, that I read - so many decades ago (and still have, in a box, stored away in my library collection)...."Notes To Myself"

(a very interesting story of how this book got published...)

There are even free recordings of his weekly talks, given at some church in the 1980s...

Words to Aid in Seeking Peace of Mind

When I went for my walk yesterday...I did not have any peace of mind when I started.

During my walk, I remembered the writings of Marcus Aurelius, the stoic philosopher emperor of ancient Rome - in his book, "Meditations"

This morning, I remembered a passage in Herman Hesse's 1922 novel "Siddhartha": "I can think, I can wait, I can fast"

Poker Probability Problems as Meditation

While at Walmart on Sunday, I picked-up a pack of Bicycle playing cards.

I don't usually like to play card games - but, because of the mathematical probability problems associated with estimating the odds of a winning hand in poker, I wanted to use that as an exercise for my mind - and to help take my mind off of "the unsolvable problem" I'm wrestling with currently...

It has been soothing. I've probably played somewhere between 35-50 two-person hands in just the last two days. Something I can do quickly and easily - and it is helping hone my instincts for the odds of which is the better winning hand.

Eventually, I'll increase the problem space to five hand games.

This is also subject-matter expertise practice for a poker-playing AI system I've wanted to design for some time...to explore some aspects of AI system design in a small contained problem space.

Japanese Houses

Have you heard about the €1 homes that are available in some of the remote rural towns of Spain, Italy, and Portugal?

This is due to the migration of the younger generations moving away from those towns and settling in the larger cities - and as the aging population dies - their heirs are not interested in the properties - and often just quit paying taxes on them...then they are seized by the local municipalities - and a few years ago, these types of programs began...

Did you know that there is similar thing happening in Japan? Sometimes those homes are offered for free, or the equivalent of $1 USD.

Of course,  you can also find home in those rural areas for more...I have looked at listing for homes that are very appealing to me - and there has been quite a diversity of listings...and when  you raise your budget to say $500, $5000, $25,000, or even $50,000 (USD) - there are even greater inventories to be found.

This is the YouTube video that got me hooked on the idea of a Japanese farm house...

TV Series or Movie Idea

I have enough material to write a very funny Woody Allen-esque movie script.

Tentative working titles:
- "Bats in the bellfry"
- "What Fresh Hell is This?"
- "Gods Wild Half Acre"
- "Involuntary Hold"
- "Code Grey" <i.e., Psychiatric Emergency>

Head of Nursing: Leslie Jones
Nurse #1: Wanda Sykes
Nurse #2: Melissa McCarthy
Social Worker: Anna Kendrick
Psychiatrist: Ali Wong
Janitorial Services: Bruce Campbell
Patient #1: Hugh Laurie

What I Believe

We are all one tribe...

Floating through space on a fragile blue marble...

We are only temporary stewards...not owners of this earth.

There must be balance - a Yin and Yang - in any ecosystem.

Our resources are finite, while we are limited to this planet.

Liberty, freedom, clean air, fresh water, food security, shelter, access to medical services - regardless of income, peaceful co-existence - these are the primary fundamental rights.

Today was almost a good day

Not all days are good.

Only just a few days across a lifetime are ever truly great.

Waking-up this morning - with no particular place I needed to be, no particular thing that needed to be accomplished.  Not a typical Saturday.

I enjoyed a relaxing breakfast, grabbed a quick shower, caught up on the latest world news, and checked my inboxes.

In the afternoon I ran by my mailbox - and then decided to get a 1-hour massage.

Picked-up a few things at the grocery on the way home.

I watched the "The Matrix Resurrections" movie this evening(not as good as I had hoped, but not as bad as I feared).

Tomorrow I will focus on several book reviews that I owe a few marketing coordinators with a particular publishing house.

This day could have been good.

It is just lacking one thing...

A Ripple Sent Out Across Time and Space

(image credit: rony michaud from Pixabay)

Across infinite multi-verses, across all of Time and Space...

I send out a ripple...

A thought...

A sound...

A mental shout...

A single word...

A vibration...

And now, I wait...

Confident that The Great Infinite Is - will have heard my message.

Confident that a response will be received.

Trusting Your Intuition - Though You May Stand Alone

When, as a young buck private, in Basic Training at Ft. Sill, in Lawton, Oklahoma - during my tour of duty with the U.S. Army - I observed an event that crystalized for me what it means to follow that small voice in the back of our minds - which is our conscious...the True North of ethical behavior...the courage of one's convictions...

About 200 recruits were in a training workshop - learning how to assemble various radio gear into different configurations. The instructor for the session had finished his lesson material - and now we were to perform an assembly task - as a form of hands-on testing.

The instructor gave directions - and as I recall - specified that each was to do his own work...and then he left the room for perhaps 25 minutes.

199 of the recruits copied the ideas of one or two strong personality individuals...and 199 recruits built the exact same configuration.

One recruit stood quietly amid the chaos and looked intently at the components on the workbench before him. Without sure knowledge of whether the configuration was indeed correct - he quickly assembled his components into what he thought [hoped] was the requested configuration.

When the instructor returned - he quickly walked through the room - and stopped before the recruit with the only different configuration.

The instructor taunted this lone recruit...calling him names, making fun of him...getting the other recruits to laugh and ridicule him for his stupidity.

With all his cunning, the instructor sought to get the lone recruit to change his mind - to waffle - to go along with the crowd. But he would not. Steadfast, he held on to what he believed to be the truth - no matter the consequences - no matter what the crowd said.

When the instructor asked for a show of hands to indicate how many people thought the lone recruit's configuration was wrong...199 hands went up.

It was only then that the instructor exploded with real anger...for most of the 199 recruits had cheated and copied the work of one or two.

They were immediately punished and told to drop and give him 100 push-ups.

While one recruit stood alone...

I was that lone recruit.

That lesson has stood me in good stead throughout my career - when I have felt the compelling need to take action, or speak up - when the pull of my True North, the voice of my conscious, and the force of my intuition overwhelm all other considerations.

Jimmy Buffett Poem on Writing

"If I could just get it on paper
I might make some sense of it all
If I could tell half of the stories
The funny way most things begin
Figure ways to disguise all the half truths and lies
Find the heart of my song with the point of a pen
Simple words can be come clever phrases
And chapters could turn into books
Yes if i could just get it on paper
But it's harder than it ever looks."

2022-01-01 Saturday - Holiday Travel Adventures

2022-01-01 Saturday:

Arrived at the Alaska Airlines ticket counter at 4:30am (which is when a. they told me they would be open, yesterday; b. what the sign on the counter said they would be open; c. what the Tampa Airport information page said they would be open). They finally showed up around 5:30am...

Luckily, I am NOT flying from Tampa to Seattle today - because that (only) flight - is cancelled. The woman in line with me, on that flight - said that the customer service number has a recording that says wait times are 10-12 hours. When she actually spoke to someone, they said "be prepared for a delay of 4-5 days".

Travel this holiday is a "roll the dice" proposition.

John Wooden: The difference between winning and succeeding

Winter 2021 Reflections - As Year's End Draws Nigh

A cold windy December day...

A heavy rain falls outside...

The wind is moaning in the rigging...

The small space heater at my feet creating a comfy cocoon of warmth within the yacht's cabin.

I sit in front of two computers - and my new 27" monitor...a cup of fresh hot coffee within easy reach...

Pivoting between conference calls with my current client engagement...and working on the next tasks in my queue of things to do...

The cabin is a mess...too many things...and not enough space to stow it all away....

The warm wood of the cabin - creating a fine ambiance for my version of a "home office"...

The end of the year draws nigh...and I am looking forward to taking the rest of the year off after this Friday...

All of my Christmas shopping is done...

Soon, I'll be boarding a Boeing 737-900ER (73J) - and traveling East for a few weeks...

Sometimes Words, Like Grains of Sand - Get Stuck In My Mind

There are thoughts about certain words that wedge themselves into my mind...sometimes like a grain of sand...and my mind comes back to them...again, and again - trying to unravel the root of the grain of sand.

The pronunciation for the word "banal" is one of them.

I grew up pronouncing it a certain way (\BAY-nul\) - but somewhere in a professional context - I heard someone pronounce it (\buh-NAHL\) - and from that moment I couldn't wait to get to an online dictionary and find the authoritative example of how it should be pronounced.

In numerous dictionaries, and on YouTube - more than half-a-dozen different authoritative sources all cited ONLY one (or two) correct pronunciations: (\buh-NAHL\) or (\buh-NAL\).

I was mortified.

I was certain that I had learned the word in elementary or junior high - as (\BAY-nul\) - but none of the references I found mentioned that pronunciation. I even used Google Translate for over a dozen languages - thinking perhaps I had learned this pronunciation during some of my many excursions to learn bits of over 30 different languages.

It was only today - when doing several more searches - that I landed on this Merriam-Webster dictionary page:

"There are several pronunciations of banal, but the three most common are \BAY-nul\, \buh-NAHL\, and \buh-NAL\ (which rhymes with canal). The earliest pronunciation given in our dictionaries is the now-unused \BAN-ul\ (rhymes with “flannel); it is attested to in our dictionaries back to the 1800s, but has dropped out of use. \BAY-nul\ is the next oldest pronunciation. The more recent \buh-NAL\ and \buh-NAHL\ came about through French influence, since banal was borrowed into English from French, and those two pronunciations are closer to the French pronunciation of banal. All three pronunciations are acceptable in educated speech; \buh-NAL\ is currently the most common, followed by \BAY-nul\ and then \buh-NAHL\. There is no reason to condemn any of them as incorrect"

Life Is A Voyage

 Today's Meditation:

In 1996, I moved to Northern Virginia - where I lived until I moved to Seattle in 1999.

One of the most enjoyable things I did in the last year that lived in the area - was to spend a wonderful afternoon walking through the National Gallery of Art.

Now, there are many magnificent works of art in that illustrious complex of buildings...but, art speaks to the soul...and it wasn't in any of the main galleries that I found that which truly touched my soul. it was in an out-of-the way portion of one of the galleries, that I happened upon a painting that struck me like thunder. I stood transfixed for a long time...savoring the painting before me.

A painting by the Dutch artist, Ludolf Backhuysen, called "Ships in Distress off a Rocky Coast", 1667

National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Fortunately, I was able find a print in the gallery gift shop, before leaving that day.

The painting, for me, is a metaphor. For life is a voyage...and there will always be ships that are in distress. Ships that are approaching danger, some that are just escaping. Some that steer well clear of danger, and others that rush upon reefs with wild abandon - heedless of the warnings of others. Some ships will crash upon the rocks - and others may yet avoid such disaster. Keen eyes are needed to read the charts, to scan the horizon, to read the currents, to know the shifting patterns of wind.

Voyages are not without their dangers - but ships are not made to sleep in ports.

A quote from Suzanna Arundhati Roy

“The only dream worth having is to dream that you will live while you are alive, and die only when you are dead. To love, to be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and vulgar disparity of the life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
